Setting Manual Exposure for Nikon D5100 in Movie Mode
www.learningdslrvideo.com I want to do a shoot out amongst the Canon T3i and the Nikon D5100 but I hit considerably of a street block on setting the exposure for video clip mode for the Nikon. I did a lot of research all around the web and it seems you can manual set publicity for the D7100 but not D5100. Nonetheless it appears in the online video that I acquired it to perform. If there are any Nikon men and women out there that know if I did this properly permit me know.

Why didn't you have it manual when you changed the aperture, then you don't have to lock the exposure settings?

How to preset manual aperture and shutter speed on the Nikon D5100
Part 1:
Although the Nikon D5100 does not provide completely manual control of exposure when shooting video, there is a way to preset both its aperture and shutter speed in advance. Using this technique, you preset the camera's minimum and maximum ISO range, and take advantage of its auto-ISO feature to select the correct exposure for each shot.
Continued, part 2.0:
In the ISO Sensitivity Settings sub-menu:
Auto ISO Sensitivity Control: ON
ISO Sensitivity: 100 (set to lowest ISO you want the camera to use)
Maximum Sensitivity: 3200 (set to max ISO you want the camera to use)
Minimum Shutter Speed: 1/60 (preset to your desired shutter speed)
Continued, part 2.1:
The twist here is that you use Minimum Shutter Speed to manually preset the video shutter speed you want the camera to use. Since I always shoot video at 1/60 second, I've only needed to set this once. The camera then uses its light meter to automatically set exposure with an ISO between the (minimum) ISO Sensitivity and Maximum Sensitivity presets.
Continued, part 2.2:
However, if the required ISO for a scene lies outside your preset ISO range, the camera will override your Minimum Shutter Speed preset. In lighting conditions where the shutter speed drops too low, I use the Exposure Compensation button to lower exposure until the shutter speed is boosted back up to my preset speed. Once all settings look good, I use the Exposure Lock button to keep the exposure fixed while filming.
Continued, part 3:
While this may sound convoluted, it gives you more convenient control over exposure than Manual mode would. Here's how you use it in practice:
1. Set your desired aperture in Aperture Priority mode.
2. If you prefer, adjust focus in the viewfinder.
3. Enter Live View mode and confirm focus.
4. If needed, use Exposure Compensation to set desired shutter speed.
5. Press Exposure Lock button.
6. Press Video Record button to start filming.
One question, if u put the nikon on manual mode and change the shutter and apreture, will they change when going to the live mode?

Hi Dave. Can you control the ISO? THanks.
@androg0000 Because Nikon is a Canon is Video mode
I still don't get why most of the NIkon videos are done by people who shoot mostly Canon.
I would never buy Canon 60d due to Moire and Jello effect.

u can change exposure manually during video recording... u have to be in A,P or M mode only... just hold the exposure button below the shutter and rotate the dial wheel... i think u can do ISO too but not sure... u can set the function button to do ISO and try to do the same thing, holding it and rotate the dial...
Good Tutorial.....!!!!! But the exposure acts funny when you try to focus while shooting.Am I doing something wrong?
@BrunoAlexanderSilva Could be because you are using a different lens compared to this video. Is your lens able to go to f2.5?
But The Shutter is automatic! (Same in A- mode....)
There's a way to first set the Shutter, and second the Aperture? In that case, the shutter speed's value remains the same.... ¿or It's not possible to do that?
@EricRossi25 No, the D3100 only offers 1080p/24fps and not 25fps or 30fps like the D5100 does at that resolution.
@CoolMc69 The d3100 offers the same and was before the 51
@BrunoAlexanderSilva you might need to zoom out, what lens are you using cause that will determine whether you can even get your camera to 2.2 and it also depends what mode your in, shutter priority, priority, manual, or apature priority. and the lock button is directly beside the jog wheel its in the same spot for all Nikon's
im new with my nikon and im trying to follow what you explained, but i cannot get my exposure to 2.5, only stays ate 3.5 and i cant find the lock button xD
so is there a manual exposure control for nikon d5100. I heard it didn't have any. Someone reply pls
Exciting day at artoftheimage when you returned it also.
Hi... If you buy D90 and D5100 with 18-105 VR kit, it costs almost the same, maybe a $100 difference. Which camera would you suggest, when I am all into shooting stills and no videos at all?
@joringrant - $769.99
How much was it in CAD?
@bennybeibe - Canon 600D, no question. The Nikon D5100 is crippled when it comes to video.
@amirza1981 - I'm hoping/thinking we should hear something in the summer. Of course, the thought occurred to me that perhaps the Japan disaster has set Nikon back on their release schedule for the D800. Let's hope not.
@robertlam18 - Sony makes excellent sensors, as demonstrated by the Nikon D7000, Pentax K-5, and Sony A580, all of which use the same sensor as the Nikon D5100 which is the BEST crop sensor on the market today.
@robertlam18 - The D5100 isn't aimed to be a competitor to the Canon 60D. It's aimed at the Canon T3i level which is approx the same size.
Funny a big camera leader company has to use sensor from Sony which is a sub par camera company in the past.
Problem is it is not as big as the 60D so if you want a balance camera then still one have to get the 60D.
Would you recommend this camera over the Nikon D7000? I am getting one in about 2 weeks and want to get the best cam within my budget. Knowing that the sensors on both these cameras are the same, this has better video over the Nikon D7000 so would it make it better than the other? Can't wait for a full on head to head comparison between the two.
Hi,
at 4:14 you mentioned the Nikon D800. Do you have any news when it will be released? I am looking forward to buy the D700 and now I am wondering now if I shall wait for the D800. Any thoughts on that?
i want to shoot short films with dslrs, should i choose d5100 or canon 600d? please help me
Hey I wana get a couple of these cameras for streaming purposes. Can I connect it to the computer through hdmi and stream online with it?....would the menu pop up and be in the way? and what resolutions can I do that with?...
i just bought a d3100 on friday i payed 988 but got the twin lens kit with a 18-55 and 55-200 so not to bad but how does this compare in price
@ArtoftheImage This makes me a little sad inside
lol. Oh well.
@akmalrosli Depends upon your budget.
Hahahaha! Love it : 'Just checking to make sure my mic's on'..
I'm on D5100 number 4 with the first 3 having Hot Red Pixels showing up on the final images.
This 4th camera has one small purple hot pixel that is hardly noticeable.
Any hot pixels on you D5100?
how would you compare the d5100 to the canon t2i or t3i (since theyre pretty much the same thing)?
I put hands on a D5100 and it felt really cheap. Small, plastic-y, button placement felt strange. Like the hat.
looks small for your hands
@Tavor21Actual thats weird as when i was in jessops store (uk). the canon 60d out performed the nikon 5100 and the 7000 as my mate is looking to get into video. He brought the 60d as we agreeded that the canon looked better in performance.
@Basicccc123456 - Possibly... more so than the Nikon D3100.
Problem remains that you need AF-S lenses to use AF.
@bpmuzik808 - Yes, I expect the image quality to be equal between the D7000 and the D5100. DXOMarks appears to back this up as well.
